The 2026 NBA Rookie of the Year race has been nothing short of down to the wire. Former Duke standouts Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel have proven that they will be cornerstones for their respective franchises in the coming years, but as of now, which newcomer will cap off their season as the Rookie of the Year?

The Backgrounds

Following the shocking Luka Dončić trade back in February 2025, the Dallas Mavericks beat the lottery odds at 1.8% and landed the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. In need of a new face of the franchise in Dallas, the Mavs selected 18-year-old Duke freshman Cooper Flagg. Pairing the rookie phenom with the offensive talents of Kyrie Irving and the defensive tactics of Anthony Davis was a sign of hope for Mavs fans... though unfortunately, that dream was cut short. Davis was traded to the Washington Wizards at the deadline and Irving was shut down for the season as he continued to recover from his previous season-ending ACL tear. The Mavs train was derailed from the jump, leaving Flagg trying to steer a lost cause with no destination.

The last few years for the Charlotte Hornets haven't been exciting, with 20-win seasons riddled with injuries and off-court distractions, but 2026 feels like the first time they've been able to put something together in a long time. The Hornets selected standout Duke freshman Kon Knueppel with the No. 4 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, solidifying more offensive scoring and 3-point shooting alongside the already electric LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Miles Bridges. After going 11-23 through December, the Hornets went on a 33-15 run to finish with a 44-38 record. If Knueppel can help dig Charlotte out of the play-in, it would be their first postseason appearance in a decade.

The Roads for the Rooks

Flagg was thrown into the fire, but it’s safe to say he’s no stranger to the pressure. This season, he averaged a league-high 21.2 points amongst all rookies, along with 6.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Not to mention his solid defensive impact with a 115.0 defensive rating, also leading amongst all rookies. Flagg’s rookie season was full of highlights and historic performances, including an ethical 51-point masterclass against the Orlando Magic, which was the most scored by a rookie this season. The 19-year-old also recorded four 40-point games this season, passing LeBron James as the most by a teenager in NBA history. Though his performances and accolades didn’t always result in wins, Flagg’s ability to impact the game didn’t go unnoticed. With the returns of Kyrie Irving and Dereck Lively II on the horizon, plus a top-10 lottery pick to be granted in a month, Coop and the Mavs may just turn things around in 2027.

Knueppel immediately shot out of the gate, already showcasing veteran levels of efficiency from deep as a 20-year-old rookie. On the season, he averaged 18.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, all while shooting a league-high 42.5% from downtown amongst all rookies. Kon’s rookie season was headlined by a record-breaking 273 three-pointers made, making him the first rookie in NBA history to lead the league in the stat. Knueppel and the Hornets have shown that they can keep it competitive against any team in the league, with wins over solidified title contenders like the Thunder, the Spurs, and the Celtics. The rookies’ addition has 100% factored into the leap of the 2026 Charlotte Hornets, and a taste of the postseason is something their fans have been missing. Luckily, they may have to get used to it with Kon on the squad.

What’s Next?

Flagg and Knueppel combined for 83-points in a masterclass brawl when the Hornets edged out the Mavericks 123-121 back in January, and it’s safe to say that the NBA is in great hands. With other rookies such as VJ Edgecombe, Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, and so many other talented stars, it’s without a doubt that the 2026 rookie class will go down in history. The Rookie of the Year award is simply too close to call, as Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel have planted their marks on new eras for Maverick and Hornet basketball. The former Duke roommates have been duking it out all year long, and they will continue to do so for many years to come.
