The Resurgence of ESPN’s NFL Broadcasting

How ESPN Won the NFL Schedule Release

4 days ago on May 14th, 2026, the NFL released its schedule for the 2026 season. Between a record-breaking nine international games across 4 continents and 7 countries, 8 streaming platforms/channels, 2 matches on Wednesdays throughout the season, and many riveting prime-time games, this season looks to be one of the most flamboyant ones in NFL history.

But between those 8 broadcasting networks that will show NFL games this season (FOX, CBS, NBC, ESPN/ABC, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Peacock, & NFL Network), one station takes the cake in terms of potential viewership, that being ESPN. Its already been confirmed that they’ll broadcast Super Bowl LXI, the first time the station will televise the event in 21 years at the time of the game, on February 14, 2027. But if you measure every station’s primetime schedule, none come close to the fireworks and grittiness that ESPN offers fans this year.

Two big steps for ESPN to earn more responsibility in the NFL’s broadcasting department were taken in back to back years, right after Covid-19’s quarantine restrictions were lifted, allowing fans back into stadiums for the first time in two years.

On July 19, 2021, ESPN announced that former star QBs Peyton and Eli Manning would host an additional presentation of Monday Night Football, formally known to this day as Manningcast. Manningcast offered live commentary & reactions from two of the best QBs to ever play the game, while featuring many former & current stars not just in pro football, but in multiple professional and collegiate leagues, as well as big names in the entertainment industry. Such daunting names included Brett Favre, Nick Saban, Tracy Morgan, Caitlin Clark, Saquon Barkley, LeBron James, John Legend, Joe Burrow, the Kelce brothers, and many more. The idea of an informative in-time breakdown of the game brought to you by two NFL legends, combined with guest appearances by fan favorites across multiple entertainment platforms, hit the nail on the head post execution.

One thing that previously put other stations such as FOX and CBS on widely agreed upon tiers above ESPN, was their pre-game presentation. Seeing former greats of the game talk ball for 2 hours before the 1pm EST kickoff was warming; welcoming. While ESPN always had a pre-game show, Monday Night Football being on a Monday left them at a disadvantage; many fans were simply not present for the pre-game antics due to being involved with the business of life.  Manningcast was and still is a great alternative option to blend entertainment and intellectualism.

Approximately a year later before the 2022 season, ESPN announced that renowned FOX commentators Joe Buck and Troy Aikman would be on the mic for Monday Night Football. What made this addition so special to ESPN was that it gave them a new iconic voice; the first since Mike Tirico’s departure in 2016. With 3 play-by-play announcers taking the helm in the 6 seasons between. Landing Joe Buck and Troy Aikman was a home run and a large step forward for ESPN to re-cement themselves as a NFL broadcast network capable of not just handling big sporting events, but conquering them with ease.

With the rights to NFL Network broadcasts as well following a closure in February of 2026, the international window now completely belongs to ESPN. To build up to the privilege that is broadcasting the Super Bowl, their 2026 broadcasting schedule which includes both Monday Night Football, 5 international games, 2 TBD stand-alone games in week 16, and 2 playoff matchups, is easily the most captivating single station schedule out of every broadcasting network. As it follows…

29 matchups. An NFL record for the most stand-alone/primetime games televised on one singular network in a season. And its not just empty calorie quantities; of the 22 already confirmed regular season matchups, 17 have at least one team who was in the playoffs last season. And with 4 unconfirmed matchups all taking place at the tail end of the season, we can fairly assume that all of them will hold teams with heavy playoff implications. Add on the last 3 playoff matchups, and now every single game on ESPN matters, there is no filler as of today.

Whether or not ESPN can actually handle a daunting workload is yet to be seen in all fairness. But for anyone who misses the feel of the “old NFL” (whatever that even means these days), ESPN/ABC have done everything they can to try to rehabilitate their dominance in the broadcasting market. In the meantime, which of these 29 games are you most looking forward to?
