FIFA’s Selective Silence
How An Administration Supposed to Represent It’s People is Leaving Their Most Loyal Supporters Out to Dry

The 2026 World Cup is underway in the 3 host nations of the United States, Canada, and Mexico and to say there was controversy leading up to the tournament would be an understatement. But amidst travel bans, corrupt administrative collaborations, and unreasonable ticket prices, FIFA’s silence has been loud. The only statements regarding any of the issues have been cheap assurances by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, trying to use the validity of the World Cup as an excuse for fans to just “deal with it”. However the one thing FIFA decided to finally open their mouth about on the morning of the tournament wasn’t the insane Iranian travel restrictions, the absurd ticket prices, or the AFCON referee of the year denied entry into the United States, but the jersey design of the Haiti national team. Yes. You read that right.

As pictured above, the original Haitian jersey design is simple all around, but in the bottom right corner, a visual depiction of the Battle of Vertieres and the Haitian revolution. In 1803, revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines tore the white band off a French flag to create a new one, deeming themselves “the world’s first free Black republic”. That monumental occasion is recognized nationally in Haiti on May 18, Haitian Flag Day.
For Haiti, 2026 is their first World Cup appearance since 1974, an exceptional achievement for not just the team but the nation as a whole. The World Cup isn’t just a football tournament, its a path to represent yourself and your culture to the entire world. So considering quite literally billions will be watching your team on the big stage, why not tell your nation’s story in a simple yet effective way?
On the eve of the World Cup, it was all torn down. According to FIFA, certain qualities were deemed “too political” and that the visuality “could be interpreted differently under its equipment regulations”. A symbol of national pride, gone; the day before the tournament.
Multiple teams wear flags on their jerseys that are deeply rooted in colonialism, oppression, and prejudice, but the moment a symbol of hope and freedom takes that same stage, silence is demanded. But make no mistake, all FIFA did was bring even more attention to the side of Haiti. The previous design is sold out on their official website, and what was originally supposed to be a story learned with the eyes, has turned into a passionate narrative against the oppressive mindset of FIFA.
What’s even more ironic about the situation is the fact that FIFA chose to speak up on, despite the laundry list of domestic issues that have occurred throughout the tournament. Because 75% of the tournament takes place in the United States, including the World Cup Final on July 19, FIFA has to work closely with whatever presidential administration is in place. The Trump administration has been anything but kind to foreign travel policies, so for a management responsible for the ultimate global family reunion that the World Cup is, you’d think they would step in for the people that carry the heart of the beautiful game and its bride.
But even on the morning of Mexico and South Africa’s kickoff, the silence among disputes continued, with Somalian referee Omar Artan denied entry to the United States at Miami International airport following an 11 hour interrogation over suspected ties with Somali militant groups.
To attach the necessary credentials, Artan was recently named AFCON’s (African Cup of Nations) best referee following the 2025 tournament. He was selected to officiate in the World Cup in April of 2026, a dream that anyone involved in the sport holds close to their heart from the day they first kick a ball.
This is obviously not the first travel related incident that has come with the majority of the World Cup being in the United States. Iran’s national team (not fans, team) was granted their visas on June 5th, just 10 days before their opening match against New Zealand, with many of the squad’s staff denied entry as well. The travel restriction is arguably the worst part; The original plan was for the team to stay in Tucson, Arizona as their 3 games are in Inglewood, California and Seattle. Now, they must stay in Tijuana, Mexico, and fly into the cities of where their games are being played the morning of; and leave immediately after, a massive disadvantage for the players.
There’s an entire tangent that could go on regarding similar issues, but FIFA has represented themselves horribly and has left their most loyal fans out to dry. With the World Cup still young, there is still time to fix these problems, but the amends need to be made now. Football is a method of expression and these countries deserve every right to participate in showcasing their culture. FIFA has lost the plot, and the time to gain it back is ticking.
