England vs Argentina may very well go down as one of the greatest Semifinal matches of all time. On one end, the English come into this game having risen to every occasion placed in front of them; finding ways to improve game after game and conquering the set tasks that lie in front. On the other end, Argentina has stepped to every plate the moment has demanded, and now their unteachable resilience will be tested once again with the World Cup Final on the line.

There are countless contrasting factors in this game. The adaptation of Thomas Tuchel’s English squad vs the persistence of Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina. The two best players of this matchup Jude Bellingham and Lionel Messi, both being playmakers who spend a lot of time thriving at the 10. The off ball antics that will ultimately decide the flow of this match. A football rivalry as old as time. Messi’s first time facing England. What more could you ask for?

England’s best hope at winning this game goes much further than the talent on paper. Tuchel’s squad is built for games like this, where physicality and fatigue will act as key components. But on top of that, England’s offensive creativity seems to refine with every game. Behind the big names of Kane and Bellingham, loads of credit also belongs to Anthony Gordon, Bukoyo Saka, and Declan Rice as well. England isn’t just talented, they’re fluid and brute at the same time; one of the commonly yearned but rarely achieved traits for winning teams in modern football.

Transition set-up will most likely be the angle England takes today. Throughout this World Cup, they’ve never focused on a traditional midfield; instead the long ball and extended dribbles have been their forte. Today they face a midfield that has been reliable but vulnerable, so simply overwhelming by keeping the ball moving and eventually generating a favorable mismatch has to be on their sheet today.

But if all else fails, of course England’s talent can just will them to victory. Jude Bellingham has been one of the absolute best players this entire World Cup and he’ll look to add to that resume against Argentina today. But sleeping giants Harry Kane might be of more concern due to the lack of recent attention towards him. With no open play goal since the DR Congo game 2 weeks ago, he’s got to be hungry to get in the back of the net.

Roster for roster England takes the cake, with better players all around the pitch. But the presence of one man almost alone has been the reason for Argentina even being here to begin with; and will be the reason this game won’t be over until the final whistle blows.

Imagine Andres Iniesta outplaying everyone at the 2022 World Cup. Or Zidane outplaying everyone in 2010. Sounds crazy and completely unrealistic right? Those players at the time were younger than Lionel Messi now, and his current World Cup has been so great there’s genuine Ballon D’or talks with his name attached.

At the fresh young age of 39 years old, Lionel Messi has been otherworldly. So much to the point where we’re beginning to run out of words for how well he’s playing. There’s something about certain athletes on the field in their respective sport that can’t be described; simply the will not to lose. Messi this World Cup has been all of that and so much more, and its only realistic to predict he puts on one of if not his best World Cup showing today.

These are the matchups we live for. England has yet to adjust to the rhythm of a match since the Ghana game, and this team is primed for a World Cup Final. But sometimes, this sport is simply about who wants it more, and the untraceable, unteachable, mental grit of Argentina is a terrifying hurdle that lies ahead.
